NJT ALP-46A
in short
1st order
The New Jersey Transit Corporation (usually shortened to New Jersey Transit, NJ Transit or NJT) is a statewide public transportation system serving the state of New Jersey and Orange and Rockland counties in New York. It operates bus, light rail, and commuter rail services throughout the state, notably connecting to major commercial and employment centers both within the state and in the adjacent cities of New York and Philadelphia. - wikipedia

Since 2002 NJT operates a batch of 29 tri-phase electrics on its network, built and delivered by Bombardier Transportation in Europe; the ALP-46 series. In 2008 and 2009, NJT again selected the German-Canadian manufacturer to supply new electrics and in two stages 36 new units were ordered. These formed the ALP-46A series. Although the mechanical part and the exterior design resemble that of the original ALP-46, the new series is technically more advanced; Semiconductor technology was upgraded from GBO to IGBT-technology, duration power increased from 5300 kW to 5600 kW and the maximum speed went up from 160 kph to 200 kph. The new locomotives are being used with the multi-level trains NJT has been adding on the Northeast Corridor and New Jersey Coast lines.

NJT ALP-46A: details
On 12.11.2009, Bombardier presented the first ALP-46A (no.4629) at its assembly plant in Kassel. On behalf of Bombardier, Peter Ammann, Vice President Sales & Marketing / Locomotives, handed over a scale model of the ALP-46A to Steven Santoro, Asisstent director of New Jersey Transit.

During the presentation, many more units could be seen at Kassel in different stages of construction. First unit to leave Kassel was again de 4629, on 17.11.2009 around 10.00 pm, loaded onto a truck. Then of course the usual testing and evaluation period started, at Bombardier test site in Pueble, Colorado, USA.

First revenue services with the ALP-46A's started at the end of June 2010. The new units were always supported by an ALP-46's in the beginning, as back-up. Delivery of the ALP-46A ended in april 2011, when 4664 left the factrories.
